Hoodia Gordonii Side Effects

Hoodia Gordonii side effects are elusive to pin down, to say the least.  Some people say that there are no side effects.  Others urge caution, saying it can damage your health.  Which is right?

There are two main effects of hoodia, and they are suppressing hunger and suppressing thirst.  Suppressing hunger will help to lose weight, but supressing thirst could potentially cause problems.

Hoodia Gordonii Side Effects To Be Aware Of

The most critical hoodia gordonii side effects involves taking hoodia while you are on prescription medication. Hoodia hasn't been used in North America long enough to determine if there are special concerns for various health issues.  And even if the San Bushman have been taking it for years (see the hoodia gordonii page), it's a pretty good bet they weren't taking prescription medications!

If you have diabetes or are borderline diabetic, be cautious of taking hoodia gordonii.  There is a theory that hoodia makes the brain think there is enough blood sugar, which is part of the reason it has an appetite-supressant effect.  If this is true, then a person's blood sugar could drop dangerously low without the usual warning signs.

Other possible hoodia gordonii side effects include something you may not have thought about.  Are you taking the real hoodia gordonii, or some other hoodia?  If there is little in the way of documentation for the real hoodia gordonii side effects, there is even less for its relatives.  

And finally, there is concern that the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii, a substance called P57, could cause liver problems.  There are no official studies on it, but if you have liver or kidney problems, you may want to think twice about taking a supplement.  And talk with your doctor.

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken hoodia gordonii and have lost weight.  There are others who haven't dropped pounds.  You have to decide for yourself if the possible hoodia gordinii side effects outweight the potential benefits.
